Ingredients and Substitutions

There’s a printable recipe card for this hot honey recipe below. You only need 3 ingredients to make this – it couldn’t be any easier!

  • Honey: Any runny honey works perfectly for this recipe. For a vegan version you could use maple syrup instead.
  • Chilli Flakes: Also known as red pepper flakes in the US. Making this hot honey with dried chilli flakes helps it keep for longer and gives it a lovely red speckle.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: You can also use white wine vinegar or lemon juice, this just complements the sweet honey and helps it last longer too.

Pour the honey into a saucepan, add the chilli flakes and stir to mix together. Place on a low heat and bring the honey to a simmer.

Remove the honey from the heat, stir well and leave to stand for 10 minutes. This will let the honey really absorb the chilli flavour!

Drain the honey through a fine sieve into a clean jar, then add the apple cider vinegar and mix well. Cool to room temperature, seal with a lid and store.

This hot honey can be kept at room temperature for up to 3 months – there’s no need to refrigerate it but you can keep it in the fridge if you really want to. It won’t harm it!
