This easy, homemade Tzatziki Sauce is the perfect creamy, refreshing accompaniment to your favourite Mediterranean dishes. This Greek tzatziki recipe is simple to whip up in just a few minutes – perfect for salads, burgers, gyros and kebabs. Naturally gluten free.

You’ll Want This Tzatziki Sauce With EVERYTHING
- Why choose this recipe? This creamy and refreshing tzatziki sauce is a cool cucumber and yoghurt dip. It goes SO well with everything, from Greek Chicken Burgers to slathered in Greek Chicken Gyros. Plus it’s naturally gluten free and great for making ahead.
- Top Tip: I know it seems faffy but please don’t skip the part where you squeeze the water from the cucumbers, it’s totally worth it. Keep the cucumber juice to add to water (or a G&T) for a refreshing drink!
- Serving Suggestions: I love eating this tzatziki instead of mayo-bases sauces for a lower calorie option. It’s great with everything from dipping gluten free flatbreads or gluten free pitta bread triangles, to loading on chicken kebabs or with a BBQ spread.
Ingredients and Substitutions
There’s a printable recipe card below for this easy tzatziki recipe with the full quantities. But here are the main ingredients and ideas for any swaps.
- Cucumber: I use half a large cucumber for this quantity – I think in the US you’ll need to look for an English cucumber.
- Greek Yoghurt: Make sure you go for authentic Greek yoghurt (not Greek style) for the best creamy flavour. Low fat or full fat both work but I prefer mine with full-fat.
- Garlic Paste: I find buying pastes makes life easier but you can mince two peeled garlic cloves instead.
- White Wine Vinegar: Some recipes use lemon juice but I prefer the taste of white wine vinegar (see my gluten free vinegar guide here).
- Olive Oil: Opt for the best quality extra virgin olive oil you can find/afford.
- Fresh Mint: Some recipes also call for adding fresh dill. Personally I’m not a fan of dill but you can add an equal quantity of this if you like.
- Sea Salt
How to Make Tzatziki Sauce
There’s a printable recipe card below with the method. But here are some step-by-step photos to show you how easy this gluten free tzatziki is to make.
Grate the cucumber using a box grater (and the coarsest side).
Place the grated cucumber in a clean tea towel and squeeze out as much excess moisture as possible.
Add everything to a bowl and mix together well. Ideally, make ahead of time and refrigerate for at least an hour before serving. I like to top mine with some extra oil and kalamata olives.
TO STORE: You can easily make this tzatziki ahead of time as it will keep for around a week in the fridge. Just make sure you give it a good stir before serving.
